Substation Automation

Substation automation covers everything between the protection relays and the people operating the network: how devices communicate, how switching is interlocked, what the operator sees, and what the control centre receives. Getting it wrong shows up as nuisance alarms, unusable event records and switching that cannot be performed safely.

What this covers

  • Automation architecture — bay level, station level and the interface to the control centre, with the redundancy each layer needs.
  • Relay and IED integration — Siemens SIPROTEC, SEL, Schneider MiCOM and ABB Relion on one system.
  • Station-wide interlocking — switching sequences, earth switch and isolator interlocks, and permissive logic that prevents an unsafe operation.
  • Bay control units and RTUs — configuration, point mapping and telecontrol interfacing.
  • Operator interface — station HMI with live single-line status, control with select-before-operate, and alarm management that does not bury the important events.
  • Time synchronisation — SNTP and PTP, so sequence of events records across devices can actually be compared.
  • Telecontrol protocols — IEC 60870-5-101 and -104 and DNP3 to the network operator, alongside IEC 61850 within the station.

What you receive

  • Automation system architecture and network drawings
  • Interlocking matrix and switching sequence documentation
  • Device configuration files and signal point list
  • Station HMI project with mimic and alarm configuration
  • Integration test procedure and witnessed FAT record

Standards and references

Engineering follows IEC 61850 for station communications, IEC 60870-5 and DNP3 for telecontrol, and IEC 61936-1 for the installation, with the network operator's own interface specification taking precedence where one exists.
